Desk lights for small desks: monitor light bars and clamp lamps
- Manufacturer specifications
- Independent research

The short answer
A monitor light bar lights the desk without using any desk space. The BenQ ScreenBar Halo 2 is the most capable; the Quntis bar is the budget pick for thin, flat monitors. For two monitors, a wide clamp-on lamp like the EppieBasic 31.5-inch covers the whole desk.
The small-desk problem with lamps
A traditional desk lamp needs a base, and on a 40-inch desk that base takes space you would rather give to a keyboard or a notebook. Two kinds of light avoid that:
- Monitor light bars sit on top of your monitor and shine down onto the desk in front of it. They take no desk space and, because they are angled away from the screen, they light the desk without reflecting off the display.
- Clamp-on lamps attach to the edge of the desk. Only the clamp takes space; the arm reaches over the work area.
We have not used these lamps ourselves. The picks below are based on manufacturer specifications and on Creative Bloq's 2026 guide to monitor light bars, which reviewed each of them.
How much light you need
Singapore's office lighting standard, as summarized by A*STAR, recommends about 500 lux on the desk for reading and typing. A single ceiling light in a small room rarely provides that at desk level, which is why task lighting makes such a difference. For a full lighting plan, see lighting a home office with no window.

Best overall: BenQ ScreenBar Halo 2
Creative Bloq named the Halo 2 the best monitor light bar overall. Its reviewer liked the combination of a front light for the desk and a rear light that brightens the wall behind the monitor, the wireless controller, and the wide compatibility with both flat and curved monitors. The downsides it noted were the price and a controller that ships without a charging cable.
The rear light matters more in a small, dark room than it sounds. Looking from a bright screen to a dark wall behind it is tiring; a soft backlight reduces that contrast.
Simpler BenQ option: BenQ ScreenBar
BenQ's original ScreenBar does the main job, lighting the desk without using desk space, without the backlight or the wireless controller. Its controls are on the bar itself. According to BenQ's comparison page it fits flat monitors from 0.28 to 2.36 inches thick, but curved monitors only up to 1800R and 1.65 inches thick. If you have a strongly curved monitor, the Halo 2 is the better fit.
Best budget light bar: Quntis Monitor Light Bar
Creative Bloq picked the Quntis as its best budget light bar, noting good color rendering (a CRI of 95 or more), flicker-free light and auto-dimming. The main limit is fit: it suits flat monitors from 0.4 to 1.2 inches thick, so measure the top edge of your monitor before ordering. Quntis sells several versions; some newer ones add a remote and a backlight.
Best for a wide desk: EppieBasic 31.5-Inch Clamp Lamp
If you use two monitors or a laptop beside a monitor, a light bar on one screen leaves the other side darker. Creative Bloq recommends the EppieBasic for dual-monitor setups: its 31.5-inch double-head bar spreads light across a whole desk and its gooseneck arm lets you aim it. Because it clamps to the desk rather than the monitor, monitor size and curve do not matter.
The trade-offs: it needs an outlet for its power adapter, the arm is visible above the desk, and the clamp fits desks up to 2.5 inches thick.
How to choose
Measure your monitor's top edge
Light bars hook over the top of the monitor with a counterweight behind. Each model fits a range of thicknesses, and curved monitors need a model rated for their curve (shown as a number with R, such as 1800R; smaller numbers mean a stronger curve). Measure the thickness of the top edge, not the whole monitor.
Check where the power comes from
Most light bars run from a USB port. If your monitor has a USB port, the bar can draw power from it and needs no extra outlet. Otherwise, it plugs into a USB charger. Clamp lamps usually need their own adapter and outlet; see how to hide desk cables to keep the cord tidy.
Pick a color temperature range
ENERGY STAR's lighting guidance describes warmer light (around 2700 K) as similar to old incandescent bulbs and cooler, daylight-style light as good for reading. Lights with an adjustable range let you use cooler light during the day and warmer light in the evening.
Check color rendering if color matters
Color rendering index (CRI) describes how naturally a light shows colors, on a scale up to 100. Creative Bloq highlights the Quntis bar's CRI of 95 or more. If you work with photos, design or makeup, look for a high CRI figure in the specifications.
Consider a webcam
A light bar sits exactly where many people put a webcam. Some bars have a gap or a mount for a camera; check before buying if you take video calls.
Light bar, clamp lamp or desk lamp?
| Type | Desk space | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monitor light bar | None | One monitor on a small desk | Must fit your monitor's thickness and curve |
| Clamp-on lamp | Only the clamp | Two monitors, or a laptop beside a monitor | Needs an outlet; visible arm |
| Desk lamp with a base | A few inches | Desks with spare surface; reading paper | Takes space you may not have |
Common questions
Do light bars cause glare on the screen? They are designed to aim light down at the desk rather than at the screen. BenQ markets its ScreenBar models as producing no screen glare. A conventional lamp is more likely to reflect off the screen if it sits behind or above the display.
Can a light bar replace a desk lamp completely? For most screen work, yes. For reading printed documents spread across a wide desk, a light bar on one monitor may not cover the whole surface; that is where a wide clamp lamp helps.
Does a light bar work on a laptop? Most are designed for monitors. Laptop lids are thin and often too light to hold a bar with its counterweight. Check the minimum thickness in the specifications.
What about webcams? Bars sit where many webcams go. If you take video calls, check whether the bar has a mount or gap for a camera.
